Joyce (Joy) Erickson
September 11, 1944 – December 22, 2014
Joyce “Joy” Erickson, 70, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Dewey, Arizona, while on her way to celebrate her new granddaughter’s first Christmas. Born Sept. 11, 1944, in Buffalo, New York, to Harry and Irene Klamborowski, she grew up in Buffalo and graduated from D’Youville College in 1968. She lived for many years in Spokane, Washington, and Sandpoint, Idaho, before moving to Dewey in 2008. Joy spent much of her life traveling the world as an international flight attendant, first for Pan Am, and later for World Airways, from which she retired in the spring of 2014. She spent time in Laos during the Vietnam War working with the Tom Dooley Foundation providing education, aid and relief to war refugees. She also worked as a school nurse and raised two great kids. Joy loved nothing more than hopping on a plane for a new adventure with a friend or family member, whether taking in the cultural sights of Europe, trekking through the jungles of Southeast Asia, or exploring ancient ruins in Egypt. Most recently, her greatest happiness was spending as much time as she could with her granddaughter. In recent years, Joyce preferred to be called “Joy.” It was a very fitting nickname because she brought joy to so many of her friends and family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Joy’s survivors include her daughter Amy Erickson (Quentin Vaughan) and granddaughter Ingrid of Livermore, California; son Eric Erickson (Ashley McCloud) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sister Sue Allison (Marty Beatty) of Cornville, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents and her sister Margaret “Peggy” Wasielewski preceded her in death. The family will hold a private memorial. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dooley Intermed International at www.dooleyintermed.org. Condolences, stories, memories or photos of Joy’s adventures may be sent to the family via the guestbook at the Hampton Funeral Home in Prescott, Arizona, at www.hamptonfuneralhome.com
Prior to Joy’s career at World Airways she was a Flight Attendant at Pan American Airways and a volunteer for the Dooley Intermed International Charity Organization. The following tribute was taken from the Dooley Intermed International Facebook Page at:

The entire Dooley Intermed organization would like to take a moment to salute a remarkable humanitarian and Dooley volunteer.
Joyce “Joy” Erickson was one of our original AIRINTERMED outreach volunteers. In February of 1971 Joy took unpaid time from her job with Pan American Airlines to volunteer with Dooley’s outreach program in Vientiane, Laos. She provided vital health care and education to scores of refugees, and provided innovative health education to children using puppet shows and pantomime. Joy also put together packages of donated clothing, visited patients in hospitals and did everything she possibly could to provide care to the sick and injured and alleviate suffering. While serving with Dooley Intermed in Vientiane she also happened to meet a handsome young US Air Force pilot who she ended up marrying. Her daughter, Amy Erickson Vaughan has reported the sad news that Joy lost her life last week, just before Christmas, in a tragic hit and run incident.
Joy was a remarkable woman who led an exemplary life reaching out to help people in need. The world needs more people like Joy.
On behalf of all of us at Dooley Intermed we sincerely send our deepest condolences to the entire Erickson family.

Anna Maria Hardenstine
October 16, 2014
Bill Hardenstine wants to inform the World Airways family that his lovely wife, Anna Maria, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2014.
Anna Maria was born near Munich, Germany, and much of her childhood was spent there during World War II. She received her degree in Business Administration from the Women’s Business School of Munich and accepted a position with the German American Public Relations Department at the U.S. Air Force Base in Bitburg, Germany. In 1956, at the age of 23, American friends at Bitburg AFB sponsored her immigration to the United States. She arrived in Washington, D.C., and within a few days was employed by a law firm that specialized in charter administration and tariff matters for several airline clients, including World Airways. During her tenure with the law firm she established a very close relationship with the Civil Aeronautics Board and attended the University of Maryland.
World Airways Senior Management recognized Anna Maria’s talents and convinced her to join World in 1966. In 1967, Anna Maria was given the assignment to estalish a company sales office in Dusseldorf, Germany, and was appointed Director of Sales. During her three years in Dusseldorf she produced outstanding sales results. In February, 1971, Anna Maria was called back to Oakland, CA, to become Assistant to the Senior Vice-President of Sales.
Anna Maria retired from World Airways in 1974 to be united in marriage with Bill, and they were married shortly thereafter. She went on to receive her Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Hayward State.
When Bill retired in 1988, he and Anna Maria found one of their great pleasures was to travel to the far corners of the earth and enjoy their leisure years together.
Anna Maria has so many dear friends in the World Airways Family that will miss her very much. Our thoughts are with Bill at this time of great loss and sadness.
James R. Freese

James R. Freese, 75, longtime resident of Ukiah passed away on Monday evening June 16, 2014 at Ukiah Valley Medical Center hospital with his wife Linda present. James was a retired international airline captain. As a boy, he built model airplanes in a backyard workshop his father had made for him. He often rode his bike across the bay bridge to reach a small airfield where he spent hours examining details of the planes. As a young man Jim was awarded to “Gold C Pin” diamonds for achieving outstanding flying in sailplanes. His family called Jim “Papa Airplane” because he was always giving the children little balsa wood sailplanes to toss up into the air and then repairing the sailplanes when they became broken. He encouraged the children to make model airplanes and was able to send some grandchildren up in airplane rides. Jim especially enjoyed taking his wife Linda to visit aviation museums in California during his retirement years. James was a protestant, being baptized in his family’s Baptist Church when he was 9 years old. James is survived by his wife Linda of Ukiah upon marriage, their 24th anniversary would be this summer.
